Lisa Robinson: Exploring the native bee diversity of Washington State

August 22nd, 2024 at 7:00pm on Zoom

Learn a little about the native bees in Washington as represented on our WaNBS poster. Joe Dlugo made the portraits of all the bees included as well as designing the poster.

Five of the six families of bees in Washington are included and Lisa will talk about field marks that help identify native bees when viewed in the garden or wild,  plus just a few of the details that may be useful in iNaturalist or under a microscope.

Lisa Robinson

Lisa’s journey into studying wild bees began with a natural science illustration class. Designing a xeric, native garden brought wild things into their yard, and she was soon taking photos of the visitors, especially birds and then focusing on the bees. After doing an illustration of an Agapostemon, she met Dr. Don Rolfs and volunteered to sort his bumble bees, naively thinking sorting by color patterns looked easy!

She soon took both of Lincoln Best’s 2019 bee courses and lucked out by joining the Oregon Bee Atlas just as it went online because of Covid. She has earned her Master Melittologist Apprentice certificate and is working on the Journey level. She is one of the founders, and current board member of WaNBS. She can’t seem to stop looking for wild bees wherever she goes anymore.
