Lincoln Best - Bee DNA Barcoding

October 27th at 7:30pm on Zoom

Species identity is an important consideration when trying to understand how communities are organized, how they change, and how they function. For most bee genera however, there lack modern identification resources and many of these genera still contain many undescribed or otherwise cryptic species. Integrative taxonomy with a focus on morphology and DNA barcoding is an effective strategy for applying accurate species and morphospecies designations. Here Lincoln Best will introduce the basics of DNA barcoding, review his work on barcoding the Oregon and British Columbia bee faunas, and discuss some recent controversies.
